YOSHIYUKI NAGATA is Professor, Department of Education, University of the Sacred Heart, Tokyo as well as Deputy Director of the Sacred Heart Institute for Sustainable Futures (SHISF).
Much of his research has been devoted to studies on alternative education and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). For the last decade, he dedicated himself to promoting ESD with a special interest in holistic approaches to its implementation. He was a member of the Monitoring and Evaluation Expert Group for the UN Decade of ESD at UNESCO Headquarters, as well as an international jury for the UNESCO/Japan ESD Award (2015-2019).
Along with these activities, Professor Nagata has long been studying alternative education and its supporting mechanism through international comparative studies.
He is one of the board members of Free Space Tamariba, an alternative learning facility mainly for out-of-school children in Kawasaki, Japan; he has recently been organizing staff training workshops for alternative education.
He is an author of many publications including Alternative Education: Global Perspectives Relevant to the Asia-Pacific Region (Springer) and is an author of many other publications, including The Palgrave International Handbook of Alternative Education (Palgrave Macmillan).
